There are so many reasons I love blogging. Not only is it an amazing creative outlet but you can make an income from doing something you enjoy. Yes, you can actually make money from blogging! It takes a lot of work but it is possible. I will be doing a post more about that later, but for now, lets start with the basics.
Step 1. Think about what you want your blog to be about.
If you are reading this post, you probably already have a good idea about what you're interested in blogging about. Think about something you enjoy, but will also benefit others. Do you love to budget and save money, do you do amazing DIY's, or want to share how you travel inexpensively. Choose a couple main topics your blog is about. You can post about other things but try to keep your blog in the same niche.
Step 2. Think of a blog name.
You want something that is unique and easy to remember. What I like to do is grab a pen and paper and start writing down different words and ideas and trying them different ways. Think about things that will give people an idea of what your blog is about, and a choose a name that is short and to the point.
Step 3. Sign up with Squarespace
Squarespace is the most user friendly site I have found to create an esthetically pleasing blog. A few months ago, I decided I was going to switch to Wordpress. That didn't last long. I was so confused with everything I had to do to get my site looking the way I wanted it, and decided I was going to stick with Squarespace. The plans are affordable and also come with a free domain! They also include a 7 day free trial, so you can't go wrong!
Why not use a free platform?
With a free platform, its like building a house on land you don't own. It can get shut down at anytime, you may be stuck with an ugly url, and it may inhibit you from putting ads on your site or making any money at all. If you are serious about blogging I highly recommend using a paid platform.
Step 4. Choose a template
There are so many beautiful templates to choose from. I'm using the template "Kent." Squarespace also has a help center with tons of articles and videos to show you how to easily change things on your blog. Before choosing, read about what features each template has, for example, some don't have an option for sidebars, so if you want a sidebar, make sure to choose a template that has that option.
Step 6. Create a logo
I have always made my logos myself using Picmonkey. You will want to get a Picmonkey account anyway because it is the BEST for creating "Pins" for Pinterest and your blog posts. Creative Market is also great place to purchase inexpensive images to use for your logo, depending how detailed you want it.
If you feel like you need to hire someone to create your logo for you, Fiverr is an awesome website where you can find a graphic designer, but I suggest not worrying about that until later as your blog grows.
Step 7. Make it your own
This is the fun part! Once you decide on a template start editing the site and design it to fit the look you want. I like to look at blogs I admire to get ideas. I don't suggest copying the entire look of someones site, but pull ideas from a few different blogs and make it your own unique style.
Step 7. Start an email list
Step 8. Start Blogging!
Now that you have your blog up and looking the way you want it, start adding posts! I recommend publishing at least 10-20 post before launching your blog. You want viewers to have content to look at when they visit. I also suggest writing down a list of post ideas in advance and deciding how often and what days you want to post and sticking to it. I'd say 2-3 times a week is great but even if its only once a week, post consistently. Consistency is key for growing your blog!
Bonus Tip! Once you have about 10-20 posts published you can request to join group boards on Pinterest. This is a major FREE way to grow your blog fast by benefiting from other 'pinners' large following,
1. Go to Pingroupie.com
2. Find group boards that apply to your niche.
3. Under the description it'll tell you how to request to join the board, or simply go to the board and find the main pinners contact information.
4. Send a friendly email requesting to join the specific group board. (Make sure to follow them on Pinterest first so they can add you.) Include your pinterest link and account email, as well as your blog url.
5. Once they approve you, you can share your blog posts in the group board and reach a ton of people!
